AlgaFilm’s founding team consists of a group of executives with deep global experience in wastewater technology development, who are passionate about bringing sustainable nutrient recovery to the industry.
Dr. Pierre Côté is an engineer and a prolific inventor with over 100 patents. He has led the development of several products and processes in the field of water treatment. Dr Côté is the principal inventor of ZeeWeed®, one of the most successful membranes for large scale water and wastewater treatment. In 2021, Dr Côté developed an interest in microalgae and their multiple applications. What started as a hobby project led to the discovery of a new, intensive process to grow algae in a biofilm. This led to the creation of AlgaFilm Technologies Ltd which is focused on the development of a next generation process for wastewater treatment.
Ahren Britton is an experienced wastewater treatment and fertilizer product development executive. Mr. Britton was a founding member of Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies Inc, and inventor of the Pearl® wastewater treatment technology and Crystal Green® fertilizer product lines. He led the product development of both from lab to international commercial sales. This experience led Mr. Britton to develop a passion for product development in the wastewater and AgTech industries with a particular focus on nutrient management and resource recovery. In 2023, this passion led him to join with Dr. Côté to found AlgaFilm Technologies Ltd. with a view to accelerating the development of his innovative algae based wastewater treatment technology.
An experienced business and finance professional, Robert P. Beres acquired Hydromantis Environmental Software Solutions Inc., alongside his management group in 2000 and led the corporation as it became a global leader in water and wastewater treatment simulation technology. After ceding part ownership of the company to an employee group in 2014 and together expediting the growth of their proprietary technology with AI, Hydromantis was successfully acquired by global multidisciplinary management, engineering and development consultancy Hatch Ltd. in 2021. Through his work in the water and wastewater treatment space, Robert had the opportunity of collaborating with Dr. Côté on numerous occasions and is thrilled to be doing so once again through AlgaFilm Technologies Ltd.
Steven Pedersen is an experienced and creative design Engineer in the membrane product sector. He has a passion for finding innovation solutions to waste and recycle problems. He led the engineering team to design and produce the first generations of ZeeWeed® membranes for water treatment and recycle. He also led the development of the Sepuran® line of gas separation modules for Biogas upgrading. His long professional association with Dr Côté led him to join Pierre in developing the AlgaFilm technology.
Rocco Mazzaferro is an entrepreneur with deep experience in manufacturing, prototype development, wastewater system development and automation. Mr Mazzaferro has previously worked in University R&D, as well as in development of the water membrane manufacturing process at Zenon Environmental. More recently he has owned and operated a private business undertaking the design, construction, and integration of wastewater treatment prototypes and pilot systems for water technology companies around North America. In 2023 Mr. Mazzaferro joined in co founding AlgaFilm to help accelerate the development of its innovative algae based wastewater treatment technology.
