AlgaFilm provides solutions for:
- Upgrading your lagoon by decreasing BOD and NH3 loading
- Reducing operating costs, energy consumption and chemical dosing in secondary treatment applications
- Providing a polished effluent that meets NH3, BOD, TP, TN and TSS objectives in tertiary treatment
- Implementing a sustainable low-energy solution to treating your industrial wastewater
AlgaFilm Technologies Ltd.’s proprietary Algae Forest technology has a variety of applications based your effluent quality objectives and wastewater needs. We have the design expertise and operational data to provide you with an effective solutions.
Our full scale process demonstration in Kingsville is integrated into an active wastewater treatment plant, giving us the ability to test different loading rates and influent while refining our process. This helps us deliver accurate sizing and cost estimates for your wastewater needs.
If your lagoon is struggling to meet current effluent standards or you’re preparing for tighter regulations, AlgaFilm provides a simple cost and energy efficient solution. Our system can be easily integrated into the front-end of your lagoon to significantly reduce BOD and NH3 loading while also providing TP and reactive phosphate removal, helping your lagoon meet effluent objectives no matter the conditions.
Whether you’re a municipality upgrading an existing wastewater treatment system or a new development designing for future growth, the Algae Forest technology is well suited to your secondary treatment needs. Efficient nitrification and denitrification let you meet NH3 and TN limits without the added cost and energy of aeration, while biological phosphorus removal helps you meet TP limits with minimal chemical costs. The biofilm also acts as a filter, reducing TSS and delivering effluent that’s ready for tertiary treatment.
The Algae Forest can be your key to polished effluent with minimal energy usage and operational costs. The active biofilm will remove residual pollutants in your secondary effluent, helping meet NH3, TP and BOD limits, while simultaneously acting as a filter to drop TSS to effluent quality standards. Depending on the quality of your secondary effluent, your loading and your desired effluent quality, the Algae Forest can be applied in series to provide a polished effluent ready for discharge.
The Algae Forest is a versatile technology with wide applications beyond just traditional wastewater treatment. Testing has shown TDS removal, potential for metals removal through concentration in the biomass and possible uses in high strength wastewater applications. If you have a wastewater treatment need that isn’t directly addressed by our online resources, please reach out to us with the relevant information to see if the Algae Forest can be a viable solution.
In March of 2026 we completed the construction and comissioning of our first full size installation in Kingsville, Ontario. This site is integrated into the local wastewater treatment plant and is currently treating 50,000 L of primary effluent per day, with plans to ramp up loading over the course of the year. The installation has provided process validation at full scale, with NH3, TP, TN, and BOD removals all exceeding objectives set at the beginning of the project. Consistent data collection at different loading rates will continue as process improvements and changes are tested over the lifetime of the project. The Kingsville demonstration allows us to refine our process and provide you with the data you need to make the decision to apply the Algae Forest technology to meet your wastewater treatment needs.
| Influent Concentration (mg/L) | Effluent Concentration (mg/L) | Percentage Removal | |
